eLTER responds to the challenge of understanding the complex interactions between people and nature and the human impacts on ecosystems over the long term. Through its research infrastructure and transdisciplinary expertise, eLTER enables the development and application of evidence-based solutions for the wellbeing of current and future generations.

eLTER facilitates high impact research and catalyses new insights about the compounded impacts of a range of factors. It addresses existing and emerging environmental challenges on a variety of ecosystems and socio-ecological systems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, pollution, and unsustainable resource use.

eLTER provides researchers with access to approximately 250 research Sites and socio-ecological Platforms across Europe and biogeographical regions, establishing and offering harmonised and standardised data, services and training useful to citizens and experts in their joint efforts to find sustainable solutions to the Grand Societal Challenges.

Constructing the eLTER Research Infrastructure

eLTER´s development is driven by the needs of the European LTER Community among other users. It capitalises on the site network of LTER-Europe.

Several projects support the implementation of initial services and the physical network design.

eLTER RI was put on the priority list of European Research Infrastructures (ESFRI Roadmap).

eLTER’s basic architecture

eLTER Central Services range from data integration and analyses to syntheses towards actionable knowledge. They are provided by Topic Centres and the Head Office.

eLTER’s physical network consists of ~250 research sites and platforms operated by institutions across ~20 countries. It represents major European environmental and socio-ecological conditions.

The eLTER Service Portal serves as single access point to all information, services, and virtual and physical access opportunities.
