Advancing Transformative Change through Place-Based Research
11 April 2025
Place-based social-ecological research holds significant promise for advancing transformative change toward sustainability. eLTER is committed to supporting such change by strengthening its network of Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research (LTSER) platforms.
In early April, eLTER experts from Austria, Israel, and Slovakia convened in Vienna for a three-day workshop dedicated to exploring how LTSER platforms can deepen their contribution to sustainability transformations. The workshop was organized in response to the growing recognition that persistent environmental degradation continues to undermine sustainability goals at all levels. Within this context, transformative change—a term increasingly used to describe the social shifts needed to address these challenges—was the central theme.
For over two decades, eLTER RI has developed LTSER platforms as spaces for place-based, transdisciplinary research addressing pressing environmental issues. This workshop aimed to examine their potential as loci for transformative change, both in theory and in practice. The workshop combined intensive planning and reflection with informal exchanges that helped spark new ideas and connections. A highlight of the meeting was input from Professor Willi Haas, who offered thoughtful feedback and strategic insights to help shape future directions. Participants also enjoyed walks through the eastern Austrian countryside at the Neusiedlersee–Seewinkel LTSER platform and national park, birdwatching, shared meals, and lively discussion.
Participants also began drafting a manuscript focused on the following core questions:
Theoretical:
- Are LTSER platforms inherently suited to catalyze transformative change based on their design and mission?
- What aspects of their structure and operation support or hinder this role?
Applied:
- How do current platform activities foster transformative change?
- What limitations exist, and what steps are needed to further strengthen their impact?
The manuscript capturing these reflections and directions will serve as a foundation for future research, collaboration, and strategic action across the eLTER network. Stay tuned for this upcoming publication!
