How to get there?

SLOW TRAVEL BY LAND AND SEA

The easiest way to get to Finland without flying is by taking a train from central Europe to Stockholm via Copenhagen. From Stockholm the journey continues to Turku,Finland by ferry (10–12 hours). Direct trains from the Port of Turku to Tampere take around two hours. Travel options to Helsinki include ferries from Tallinn, Estonia (2–3 hours), Stockholm, Sweden (overnight) and Travemünde/Lübeck, Germany (27 hours).
TRANSPORTATION IN TAMPERE

A local bus line operates between Tampere-Pirkkala Airport and Tampere city centre. There is also shuttle service available, that takes passengers to central hotels. Taxis are also an option. Tampere is a compact city, where the proposed venue and accommodation options are within a convenient walking distance from the train and bus stations, as well as from each other. When walking is not an option, consider renting a bike or an electric scooter, or hopping on the tram.
DIRECT FLIGHTS TO TAMPERE

Tampere-Pirkkala International Airport is located only 20 minutes from Tampere city centre. Since the airport is small and efficient, travellers can be at their hotel 30 minutes after landing. Accordingly, checkin times are short and travellers need to be there only 45–60 minutes prior to the flight. The airport hosts one of airBaltic’s four bases, and the airline offers direct flights to Riga, Oslo, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Munich, Rhodes and Malaga. SAS has direct flights to Stockholm, and Ryanair to London Stansted.
TRAVEL VIA HELSINKI

There are over 150 direct flights daily from all over the world to Helsinki, the capital of Finland. Finnair has direct flights to Helsinki from all major cities in Europe, as well as from a number of cities in Asia and the United States. To lower the carbon footprint, we recommend you use train or bus connection to Tampere. Fast pendolino trains offer a very convenient ride, taking passengers from Helsinki Airport via Tikkurila station to Tampere in 1h 30 minutes. Buses between Helsinki Airport and Tampere run almost every hour and the journey takes approximately 2 hours.

Additionally, there will be a special program for parents with younger children. Our family program is organized in collaboration with Culture Cooperative Uulu.

If you would like to bring your family to the eLTER Science Conference, please contact paulina.rajewicz@helsinki.fi no later than 1 April 2025, to discuss the available options.

The eLTER Science Conference is a carbon-neutral event

As part of our sustainability efforts, we have partnered with Puuni Oy to offset the carbon emissions generated by the conference. Puuni will manage the carbon footprint for the event itself, including the venue, food, and accommodations. The only emissions not included are from participants' travel, which you can offset individually.

We encourage you to offset your travel emissions through Puuni by following these steps:

  • Step 1: Define the amount of compensation.

If your airline provides the emission amounts, you can calculate your amount of compensation using 25€ per tnCO2.

If your airline does not provide such information, you can conveniently select one of three predetermined categories 1. Intercontinental (95€), 2. Europe (28€), 3. Scandinavia (15€).

  • Step 2: Send your organization billing information to hello@puuni.fi and we send an invoice. After it has been paid we will send the certificate to your email.

Puuni's carbon sequestration projects, including tree planting in a former peat-production area of Kovalansuo, Mikkeli, ensure that your offsets contribute to meaningful reforestation efforts with a 100-year commitment to forest maintenance and carbon storage in Finland.

For more information, or to assist with offsetting, please contact us at conference@elter-ri.eu or Puuni directly.

The Kovalansuo site is a former peat production area, where there are excellent conditions for the carbon sink formed by a successful mixed forest. The land is owned by the city of Mikkeli, and the wood wealth created from the sinkhole remains for the use of the municipality's residents.
