Postdoctoral researcher, Biodiversity Digital Twin project and eLTER research infrastructure

The University of Helsinki, Institute for Atmosphere and Earth System Research/Department of Forest Sciences, is looking for a Postdoctoral researcher to a Horizon Europe project BioDT (Biodiversity Digital Twin), and the eLTER ESFRI process, where the PI at Helsinki University is professor Jaana Bäck.
BioDT aims at pushing the current boundaries of predictive understanding of biodiversity dynamics by developing a Biodiversity Digital Twin (BioDT), providing advanced modelling, simulation and prediction capabilities. By using already existing technologies and data from relevant research infrastructures in new ways, the BioDT will be able to accurately and quantitatively model interactions between species and their environment. Scientists at Research Infrastructures (RIs) will use the BioDT to 1) better observe changes in biodiversity in response to forces that result from climate change or human activity), 2) mechanistically understand how these changes occur and 3) predict the effects of these changes.
The Postdoc tasks are related to identifying the needs and requirements of biodiversity research communities and Research Infrastructure users, building active interactions between researchers and the flagship EuroHPC LUMI computing infrastructure, and internal and external communications and coordination. Active collaboration with other BioDT partners is essential, and potentially involves short internships or secondments in some partner organisation. The final tasks depend on the previous expertise of the applicant.
The position is based at the Department of Forest Sciences, one of the World’s leading institutes developing multidisciplinary expertise in the field of Forest Sciences (ranked 4th globally in the field of Forestry). The postdoc will join a thriving, open and diverse community as part of our Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), Viikki Plant Science Center (VIPS), and Atmospheric and Climate Competence Center Flagship (ACCC). In addition, the European Integrated Long-Term Ecosystem, critical zone and socio-ecology Research Infrastructure (eLTER RI) forms an international framework for the work.

We are looking for an innovative person with good networking skills and capability to work in a large, international research project. Salary level follows the University general salary rules (teaching and research personnel, salary requirement level 5), and will be depending of personal qualifications and prior experience on related tasks. The contract will be full-time and fixed-term for 18 months with potential continuation of up to 6 months, starting as soon as possible, but latest in the beginning of 2023. The appointment starts with a probationary period of six months.
