eLTER ERIC Step 1 Application Ahead in 2025

18 December 2024

In 2025, eLTER takes a pivotal step toward establishing its ERIC by beginning the two-stage process of evaluation and approval by the European Commission.

Next steps to the eLTER ERIC: Step 1 application to be submitted in 2025

In 2025, eLTER will proceed with the implementation of the eLTER ERIC by submitting the ‘Step 1 application’. This is the first of a two-step process leading to the establishment of an ERIC. In Step 1, the European Commission assesses and verifies whether an emerging RI complies with the ERIC regulation. Following a round of feedback, Step 2 then consists of a formal request to the Commission to set up the ERIC signed by all the applicants, i.e. those eLTER member countries that will join the eLTER ERIC from the start. This is an important milestone for eLTER, and marks the finalisation of the eLTER ERIC Statutes and the Scientific and Technical Description as developed by the eLTER PPP project.  It also means that eLTER is recognised by its tentative Member countries as meeting the  following requirements:

  • eLTER is necessary for carrying out European research activities;

  • eLTER represents a significant improvement in the scientific and technological fields at the European and international levels;

  • eLTER grants effective access to the European research community;

  • eLTER contributes to the mobility of researchers and knowledge-sharing within the European research area;

  • eLTER contributes to disseminating and optimising the results of research, technological and demonstration activities.

With the submission of the Step 1 application and the preparation of the subsequent Step 2 application, 2025 will see eLTER make significant strides towards the eLTER ERIC. eLTER Coordination wishes to thank everyone involved in this process for their thoughtful inputs and continuing support, and particularly the German delegation for taking the lead in this formal process.
