Integrated European
Long-Term Ecosystem, critical zone and
socio-ecological Research

WHAT are we doing and WHERE does it happen?

From a user´s viewpoint, eLTER RI comprises two main pillars:

What? The Central Services and tools

Where? The distributed physical network

  • Distributed across the partner countries.
  • Consisting of two types of in-situ facilities:

eLTER Sites foster research on the combined long-term effects of stressors on ecosystem functioning. Multiple disciplines collaborate at eLTER Sites. Depending on the level of instrumentation and other criteria, access is offered for visiting scientists.

eLTSER Platforms enable transdisciplinary socio-ecological research. They are regional-scale living labs for research on long-term human-environment interactions. They serve decision makers with actionable knowledge.

  • The common denominator is the realisation of the Whole System Approach in research and observation.
  • eLTER Sites and eLTSER Platforms comply with criteria and are formally labelled (acknowledged).
The eLTER Service Portal will in the end provide access to all information, services and access opportunities.
